Tryell's story continues with his father's release from prison and the family's re-adjustment to his father's presence. All is complicated by his father's continued abuse of his mother and the fact that his brother remains in foster care. This compelling story of a life with few breaks and/or ways out brings out the urban male teen voice in a very real manner. Fourteen and Up. Kathie Weinberg

When Tyrell's father is released from prison, Tyrell resents his father's authority and continued abuse of his mother as well as his younger brother's on-going placement in foster care.  The urban male voice is strong in this compelling story with no easy choices.

Meeting Notes for November

Meeting Notes for November 18

Positive Comments:

  • Tyrell’s authentic voice reveals a realistic character making unfortunate choices.
  • The friends are interestingly drawn, and Tyrell shows a strong sense of caring for his brother.
  • When Tyrell faces the dilemma of whether to go home, his thoughts about it seem honest.
  • Although the last pages are action-packed and tension-filled, the pacing does not feel rushed.

Observations:

  • Booth continues to grow as a writer.
  • Jasmine has a Puerto Rican “sweet 16” party rather than a Quinceanera that seems strange.
  • With Tyrell’s financial situation as it is, that he spends $200 on a date seems odd.
  • Teenagers make horrible nutrition choices.

Concerns:

  • If the violence is going to be so real, it seems that the sex should be more realistic.
